SUMMARY

This interactive workshop introduces the RAR2 method, a structured approach designed to strengthen real-world medical coding skills through active review, research, analysis, and application. Participants will learn how to apply the RAR2 framework to break down operative reports and medical records, identify key coding elements, and make accurate code selections. The session focuses on developing the critical thinking and problem-solving abilities required for coding complex medical records rather than relying solely on traditional lecture-based learning. The workshop will also demonstrate how the RAR2 method can be used alongside AI tools to support documentation analysis while ensuring the coder maintains critical oversight, analytical reasoning, and final coding responsibility.

During the workshop, attendees will learn the RAR2 method and apply it to a series of challenging operative and clinical cases. The first half of the session focuses on introducing the framework and demonstrating how it guides structured documentation review, coding research, and analytical decision-making. In the second half, participants will work through hands-on cases and engage in collaborative discussion and review, strengthening their ability to apply analysis, application, critical thinking, and problem solving while improving coding accuracy and confidence in defending their coding rationale.

Learning Objectives/Agenda:

  • Explain the RAR2 method and its role in developing structured analysis of clinical documentation for medical coding.
  • Analyze operative reports and clinical documentation to identify key elements required for accurate CPT® and diagnosis code selection.
  • Apply the RAR2 framework to coding scenarios to improve coding accuracy and consistency.
  • Evaluate how AI tools can support documentation review and coding analysis while maintaining coder oversight and decision-making.
  • Justify coding decisions by referencing documentation, coding guidelines, and the analytical process used within the RAR2 method.
