Lessons Learned From the E/M Guideline Changes

The 2021 E/M Guidelines have been in use for almost a year. The questions and concerns that were noted at the beginning are still lingering now. Why is that? It would seem that a wide majority of coders/auditors/providers are pleased with the change and appreciate the thought that went into creating this new set of guidelines. We have learned a lot about how to operationalize and apply these guidelines. In this workshop we will talk about the challenges we have seen and how we have and can overcome those challenges. Come join in and share some of your own lessons learned.

What we’ve learned and what we will discuss in this interactive workshop:

  • Change was harder than we thought
  • Explaining the updates and changes was not as smooth as envisioned
  • There are still gray areas to be addressed
  • Applying the guidelines when reviewing notes is not as easy as counting elements
  • The change were still an improvement and a good thing
