SUMMARY

As artificial intelligence increasingly handles routine and straightforward coding tasks, the role of the medical coder is evolving. Today’s coders must move beyond code selection and develop strong critical-thinking skills to evaluate documentation, validate AI-generated codes, resolve ambiguity, and defend coding decisions with confidence.

This highly interactive workshop is designed to strengthen the analytical and clinical reasoning skills medical coders need to succeed in an AI-enabled coding environment. Participants will work through real-world documentation, including full progress notes and operative reports, to identify documentation gaps, assess clinical consistency, apply payer logic, and determine when to accept, reject, or override AI-suggested codes.

Through hands-on exercises, small-group discussions, and case-based problem solving, learners will practice structured decision-making frameworks that emphasize evidence-based reasoning, compliance, and medical necessity. This workshop focuses on how to think through complex coding scenarios, not just what codes to assign.

By the end of the session, participants will be better prepared to function as coding validators, investigators, and decision-makers, adding value in workflows where AI is a tool but human judgment remains essential.

Who Should Attend

  • Medical coders and auditors
  • Coding leads and supervisors
  • CDI professionals
  • Compliance and revenue cycle staff
  • Coders transitioning to AI-assisted workflows

Learning Outcomes
