Medicare OPPS reimbursement continues to move to an encounter based methodology rather than a charge based methodology. Other payers follow Medicare’s lead so this type of reimbursement will eventually be adopted by other payers, so it is crucial for hospitals to be up to date on the changes. Understanding the components of the OPPS allows establishment of processes and policies for charge capture; understanding the need for specific and complete documentation of services, as well as which services lines will be affected.
