So the E/M Guidelines Changed…Now What?

Workshop Objectives:

1. Discuss documentation challenges faced with the new definition of time.

2. Work through some challenging scenarios for each of the three components of medical decision making.

3. Begin to look at how medical necessity may be interpreted based on documentation.

4. Work through cases and consider different ways to interpret the documentation.

In this workshop, we will begin to address some of the documentation and coding challenges that have already presented themselves with the implementation of the new E/M guidelines. We will look at each component of medical decision making and tackle some of the difficult questions and scenarios. The issue of the new definition of time poses its own challenges and that will also be discussed.

This workshop is intended for the individual who is currently coding or auditing using the new guidelines for office visits (99202-99215). There are many challenges to be addressed and the intent of the workshop is not to teach the guidelines—but to discuss what the attendee is experiencing as we all work through applying what we have learned. For a more in-depth review of the new E/M Guidelines register for the on-demand workshop E/M Fundamentals: Steps to Prepare for the Coming Changes or the E/M 2021 Guideline Updates Course.
