Coding for Infectious Diseases from a Clinical View Webinar

Learn More About Infectious Disease Coding Guidelines

Webinar Description: Coding Guideliens changes, Coding Clinic updates, disease definition changes and regulatory requires can confuse any process. With the importance of hospital quality data, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and other quality and financial factors, it is crucial to understand the infectious disease coding world, the latest clinical definitions and “jargon” used so the correct coding and documentation can becompleted accurate.

In this webinar, we will look at recent changes to the sepsis definitions and how they do not align with the current coding conventions. More importantly, by understanding these differences, you will be able to communicate, either in person or by query, with the clinicians. When two people are speaking different languages, they think they understand each other but the final result can be far apart. We will also cover HIV coding and other more common ID codes to review the pathophysiology and how it relates to interpreting documentation.

Learning Objectives/Agenda

• Understand the most current definition of sepsis that clinicians will be documening.
• Understand the impact of incorrectly coded sepsis diagnoses on hospital and Medicare Advantage finances.
• Learn about the Value Based Care models that are introducing a new focus on more than just CPT® coding. Diagnosis capitated models are increasing dramatically as are the audits done by the government to ensure accuracy.
• Gain insights into the DOJ audits and their decisions around financial penalties because of over-reporting sepsis and other infectious diseases.
• Learn strategies to communicate with clinicians in “their language” that has been changed by the most recent sepsis definitions and come to resolution of any Stdiscrepancies regarding correct coding.
• Gain a clinical perspective on other infectious diseases and the clinical jargon physicians use that will save you time when coding or reviewing charts.

Why is this topic important?

Currently, coding guidelines mandate us of terminology that the clinical guidelines recommend not using. This creates confusion and impacts quality and finance measures. As we transition to a value-based care model in many payer relationships, the importance of accurate and complete diagnosis capture has escalated. We will discuss the new value-based care model and the requirements they set forth.

Who would benefit from this topic?

• Coders
• CDI Specialists
• Compliance
• Chart Auditors
