  1. Which membership is right for me?

    If you are a current student enrolled in a medical coding, billing, auditing, compliance, or practice management course, and you haven’t yet obtained an AAPC certification, you can join AAPC at the student membership rate of $80. AAPC may request proof of current student status following purchase. Once you are certified, you are no longer considered a student and cannot renew at the student rate.

    AAPC corporate membership provides savings for organizations with six or more AAPC members. Corporate membership begins with ten (10) "spaces" that can be filled by individual members, and this has an annual due of $900. Additional spaces are $90 each. Corporate members also save 10% on AAPC online purchases.

    Purchase of individual membership ($150) is required for all others who join the world's largest training and credentialing organization for the business of healthcare. Payment plan options are only available for renewals.

  2. How to reschedule my exam online?

    • Members have 2 attempts to pass the exam, under one voucher
    • You are encouraged to go online to reschedule your exam
    • You need to be logged into the member area to do so
    • Exam vouchers can be found under My Purchases/Items, under the "Open exam voucher" tab
    • Click "Schedule Exam"
    • This will take you to the page where you can select an exam location and go through the registration process.
  3. How to remove apprentice designation?

    To remove your apprentice designation via on-the-job experience, you must obtain and submit two letters of recommendation verifying at least two years of on-the-job experience (externships accepted) using the CPT®, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10 and HCPCS Level II code sets. One letter must be on letterhead from your employer*, the other may be from a co-worker. Experience includes time coding for a previous employer and prior to certification. Both letters are required to be signed and will need to outline your coding experience and amount of time in that capacity. Download our Apprentice Removal Template for easier submission. Letterhead and signatures are still required when using this template.

    OR

    Submit proof showing completion of at least 80 contact hours of a coding preparation course (not CEUs) AND one letter, on letterhead, signed from your employer verifying one year of on-the-job experience (externships accepted) using the CPT®, ICD-9-CM, or HCPCS Level II code sets.

    Send proof of education in the form of a letter from an instructor on school letterhead stating you have completed 80 or more contact hours, a certificate/diploma stating at least 80 contact hours, or an unofficial school transcript.

    Proof of education or experience isn’t necessary to sit for the exam. It should only be submitted (via fax or as a scanned attachment to an email) once ALL apprentice removal requirements have been met.

    Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing.

    * Employers can only verify time spent coding with their organization. Proof of experience letters may be from previous employers, current employers, or a combination of both.

  4. How to look up approved CEU vendors online?

    • Go to our Approved CEU Vendors to access the list of approved CEU Vendors. There you can enter either the name of the event or the name of the sponsoring organization. This method of searching will show if the event has prior CEU approval from AAPC.
    • All certificates of approval must contain index number, name of sponsoring organization, title of program attended, amount of CEUs approved and date of program.

    Exceptions to this rule are:

    • CMS-sponsored webinars and workshops are accepted at a rate of one CEU per hour. These CEUs may come from CMS national or MAC offices. A certificate of attendance or completion with the CMS logo is necessary to show participation. However, no certificate is required for CMS’ National Provider Conference Calls. We will accept the emailed confirmation and call description as proof of participation. Usually the members listened with their entire office, so only one person actually registered and received a confirmation. This confirmation is okay to accept even if the members name who is being verified doesn’t appear on it.
    • CEUs from AHIMA audio conferences, workshops, online self-assessments and programs sponsored by AHIMA national offices and the state AHIMA branches are accepted at a rate of 1 CEU per hour (1 AHIMA CEU = 1 AAPC CEU). A certificate of attendance or completion is necessary to show participation.

      **Please note that AAPC does not necessarily accept CEUs from other entities that offer “AHIMA approved” CEUs. These organizations must apply separately for AAPC CEUs to receive an AAPC index number and CEU value.

    • Healthcare, healthcare business, healthcare finance, and healthcare management related courses taken at a college or post-secondary school can be applied towards CEUs. Each CEU is earned based on transcripts showing the “clock hours” or “credit hours.” Clock hour CEUs are earned at the rate of 1 CEU per clock hour. Credit hours are earned at a rate of 10 CEUs per credit hour. In either case, the maximum number of CEUs that can be earned in this manner is 40 hours per year.
    • Live events offering CME (continuing medical education) credit will be honored at a 1-for-1 rate. A certificate of attendance or completion is necessary to show participation. The certificate will give the total CMEs possible for the offering. The certificate must state that the event is worth CME or AMA/PRA Category 1 credits.
  5. How to find exam results online?

    • You can find exam results by logging into your account on the website, holding the mouse cursor over “My AAPC” (where the Log In/Join button was) and clicking on “Purchases/Items” in the drop down box.
    • From there, click on the "Items" tab, and then click on the exam in question. Results should be posted online within two weeks after the date of the exam. Until that time, the website will keep you updated on the progress of your exam.
