Frequently Asked Questions

Those taking and passing their first certification examination in November or December of 2015 will be allowed to demonstrate proficiency by February 29th, 2016. We strongly encourage students to demonstrate ICD-10-CM as quickly as possible to become employable.

This is required for AAPC certified members holding CPC®, COCâ„¢, CPC-P®, CPC-I®, CRC®, CPMA®, or a coding specialty (excludes CIRCC®, CPBâ„¢, CPPM®, and CPCOâ„¢). It’s recommended for other individuals with responsibility for their practice's or facility’s coding of ICD-10-CM.

Those responsible for demonstrating proficiency are required to complete one of the two assessment methods (options) by December 31, 2015 (3 months after ICD-10 implementation).

Individuals will demonstrate proficiency of ICD-10-CM format and structure, groupings and categories of codes, ICD-10-CM official guidelines, and coding concepts.

You now have two options of which to choose for meeting the requirements of proficiency. Each will measure your understanding of ICD-10-CM format and structure, groupings and categories of codes, ICD-10-CM official guidelines, and coding concepts. You may choose one based on your particular style of learning.

Choose one of these two Proficiency Demonstration options:

  • At Your Own Pace Assessment - ICD-10 Online Code Set Training - To demonstrate proficiency, successfully complete training modules, which include 150 questions and cases in the course. You can complete this at your own pace. You must correctly answer all 150 questions but will receive feedback your answers and can change them as much as you wish.
  • Timed Assessment - Timed Proficiency Assessment - 75 multiple-choice, case-based questions to be completed in 3.5 hours.

You have three options:

  • You can take the proficiency assessment
  • You can apply the $60 toward training
  • You can request a refund by calling or emailing us

Congratulations! If you have already taken the proficiency assessment and passed, then you have demonstrated your competence and do not need to take additional action. If you were enrolled in a course (online or boot camp) AND paid for an assessment, then we will refund the $60 you paid for the proficiency assessment.

You have 3.5 hours to complete the Proficiency Assessment. There is a timer showing you the time you have left to complete the assessment. The timed proficiency assessment is not moderated.

There is no time limit for completing the online code set training.

You will use the same process used to apply for a Hardship Scholarship. You will find additional information here. You will be asked to provide your contact information, respond to questions about your employment, indicate your chapter affiliation, and describe why you feel you qualify for a waiver.

Yes. Let your chapter president know you are interested in training and the option of proficiency assessment through the local chapter. Contact Marti Johnson at the Local Chapter Department for more information 801-236-2200 (ext. 133). If you have already taken training through a local chapter and have questions about your proficiency assessment options, please contact our ICD-10 department at 800-626-2633, option 3.

Prices vary, and the Local Chapter Department can better describe these options.

It depends on which direction you choose. View prices and a full discription of each here.

The integrity and credibility of our certifications are of highest priority for AAPC. If anything, the additional options provided require greater intensity of learning and development than those previously available. For example, the required online questions and exercises following online, local chapter, boot camp, or other course training are greater in number (150 vs. 75) than the proficiency assessment and allow individuals to receive feedback on why a question was missed.

You are eligible for a refund of $60, the full cost of the proficiency assessment. You have three options.

  • You can take the proficiency assessment
  • You can receive a refund
  • You can apply the $60 towards any AAPC training

Please contact our ICD-10 department (800-626-2633, option 3) for further information.

While the AHIMA training is helpful and the CEUs are transferrable, the CEUs on their own do not demonstrate proficiency. You have two options:

  • You can take and pass the proficiency assessment
  • You can go through our training (online or in-person) and complete the required exercises, which include cases and questions
