2021 Procedure Desk Reference

Descriptions and coding tips for 9,000 CPT® codes

Accurate coding begins with ensuring your knowledge of the procedures and the small differences that have a big impact. The 2021 Procedure Desk Reference simplifies complex procedure coding for clinical coders by providing easy to understand, lay descriptions for more than 9,000 CPT® codes. It’s the kind of simplified coding help you’ve come to expect from AAPC.

This valuable resource provides anatomical illustrations, billing, coding and reimbursements terms, an Evaluation and Management Survival Guide, and more.

AAPC’s difference includes these features:

  • Comprehensive CPT® code listing - 9,000 CPT® codes and lay descriptions for E/M, surgery, laboratory/pathology, radiology, and medicine codes eliminate the need for multiple resources with a one-stop resource
  • Lay descriptions - Easy to understand descriptions that include a clinical responsibility section which outlines step-by-step how the provider performs the procedure
  • Glossary of medical terms - Definitions of more than 5,000 medical terms included in the glossary that provide you with a deeper level of understanding
  • Modifier definitions and usage rules - Modifiers are taken to the next level when paired with descriptions, coding tips and usage rules
  • Introduction to surgery coding chapter - Expert guidance to coding surgical and procedures and common terminology.
  • Common abbreviations and eponyms - Eliminates the need to search in a separate resource for abbreviations and eponyms found in medical charts
  • Normal lab values and vital signs - Values and vitals aid in determining what is an abnormal or normal result, helping your reporting
  • Basic types of anesthesia - Explanations of the anesthesia procedures to aid in better understanding and more accurate coding
  • Spiral binding - Sturdy coils with large pages so it can be laid flat or folded back for scanning
  • Evaluation and Management Survival Guide - Comprehensive chapters assist in coding all types of E/M services complete with the 2021 code changes
  • Anatomical illustrations - Color plates are the perfect companion section while reading the lay terms

The Procedure Desk Reference (PDR) is the only AAPC book printed in black and white. All other code books are printed in color.

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is a code set used to classify diagnoses in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) is a coding system used to classify procedures performed in the inpatient setting.

  • ICD-10-PCS Complete Code Set - August
  • ICD-10-CM Complete Code Set - September
  • AMA CPT® Professional - October
  • Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) - November
  • Procedure Desk Reference (PDR) - December

Preorders may be cancelled at any time prior to shipment. If your books have already shipped, please refer to the return policy tab, which states all returns must be submitted within 30 days of the shipment date. Call (800) 626-2633 to cancel or return your order.

Because the code sets for each book are updated every year, it’s essential for coders to use the most current book to ensure accurate coding. Reporting wrong codes can lead to denied claim submissions and substantial penalization. It’s imperative healthcare professionals stay up to date on new codes and changes, which means obtaining new code books every year.

All AAPC exams are based on the current year’s code sets. The previous year’s books may be used on an exam, but they may be inaccurate and result in errors. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use.

For example, all exams administered in 2020 are based on the 2020 (versus 2021) code sets. Code books from 2019 may be used on the 2020 exams, but you risk using outdated or incorrect codes.

Refer to the chart below to find the books and resources allowed at various exams.

All AAPC exams require the ICD-10-CM medical code book

The ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes are implemented each year on October 1.

The CPT® codes are implemented each year on January 1.

The HCPCS Level II codes are implemented each year on January 1.

Customers who purchase AAPC code books receive code updates and other important information in our monthly email newsletter.

Yes, both ICD-10 books contain the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. In ICD-10-PCS, the guidelines appear in the front of the book. In ICD-10-CM, the full guidelines appear at the front of the code book, but chapter-specific guidelines also appear at the start of each chapter, making it easy for you to know which guidelines apply to the codes in that chapter without having to flip back to the front of the book.

Guidelines may be altered after printing of the book. You can find updates on our website on the Medical Coding Books Updates support page. This way, you always have access to the most current guidelines.

HCPCS Level II, Procedure Desk Reference (PDR), and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include modifier information pertinent to the code set in the book. There is a modifier appendix in each book, and HCPCS Level II and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) also include pertinent modifiers on foldout covers of each book, making access to modifier information quick and easy.

ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include information on new, revised, and deleted codes. Each book includes a section listing all the new, revised, and deleted code changes for that code set for that year. Plus, within the codes there are symbols designating which codes are new or revised for that year.

ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include information in the book’s introduction reviewing the symbols and conventions in the book. Additionally, the code chapter pages of the book include a legend showing the symbols and their definitions.

While not intended to teach anatomy and terminology, every AAPC code book includes over 30 pages of full-color anatomical illustrations to help you with anatomy and anatomical terminology.

Notes pages are included in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, Procedure Desk Reference (PDR), and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE).
